Materials: Ebonized hardwood, mother-of-pearl and possibly abalone shell inlay, gilt and polychrome decoration, mixed secondary woods, and metal bed hardware
Form: High-back bedstead
Description: A large American late Victorian ebonized bedstead with shaped headboard and footboard joined by conforming side rails. Each end centers an oval reserve decorated with a polychrome floral bouquet and mother-of-pearl and possibly abalone shell inlay, surrounded by gilt linework, scrolling profiles, pierced quatrefoil devices, and tall faceted posts decorated with gilt pendants. Scalloped lower aprons and repeating ornamental details connect the bed with the accompanying marble-top bedroom furniture. Its generous interior dimensions approach modern queen size. Condition: Retains an old ebonized and decorated surface with scratches, abrasions, edge wear, craquelure, fading, scattered retouching, paint loss, and surface irregularities. Shell inlay exhibits scattered losses, lifting, replacements, and irregularities. Headboard, footboard, and rails exhibit finish loss and abrasions concentrated along edges and assembly points. Side rails and support hardware have wear. Mattress, slats, and bedding are not included unless otherwise stated.
