Description: A fine American late Victorian washstand constructed in ebonized hardwood and extensively ornamented with mother-of-pearl and possibly abalone shell inlay, gilt linework, and polychrome floral decoration. The shaped white marble top has a conforming backsplash and rests above a full-width drawer and two paneled cabinet doors. Floral sprays, scrolling arabesques, geometric corner devices, scalloped aprons, faceted feet, and an unusually vivid blue-painted interior distinguish the architectural case. Part of a coordinated bedroom suite offered as Lots 78A-78E.

Condition: Retains an old ebonized and decorated surface with scratches, abrasions, edge wear, craquelure, fading, scattered retouching, and areas of finish loss. Shell inlay exhibits scattered losses, replacements, lifting, and irregularities. Marble has scratches, staining, discoloration, and edge wear. Drawer and cabinet interiors show wear, staining, debris, and losses to the blue-painted surface.
